Barandiaran Museum

The Barandiaran Museum is located at the Larruntza mill in the San Gregorio district. The museum consists of two floors. In the lower section there are numerous resources that show the importance of the archaeological and ethnographic works of Joxemiel Barandiaran. On the top, on the contrary, Barandiaran’s life is made known through didactic videos.

Joxemiel Barandiaran

Joxemiel Barandiaran Aierbe was born in 1889 in the Peruenezar farmhouse of Ataun and died in 1991 in Sara’s house. He was one of the most important Basque researchers of the twentieth century thanks to his ethnological, anthropological, archaeological and mythological works.

The Larruntza Mill and the Small Mill

The first references of the Larruntza mill date back to the 15th century. In 2003, the Basque Government declared this space as a monumental complex and although the building has preserved the original aspect, today its interior is full of technical-didactic resources.

Next to the Larruntza mill is the second mill and the Errotatxo sawmill, with its own reclinators. All these structures form a spectacular hydraulic assembly.
